Kyoto, 3rd World Water Forum
During
the last decades, East Kalimantan and West Sumatra, Indonesia, have experienced
major catastrophic fires, flooding, soil erosion, water quality degradation,
coral reef siltation and decreased fish population.A lack of knowledge and good understanding of water management issues at the river basin scale has lead to inadequate decision making and policy support actions resulting in project failure and consequent environmental degradation and impoverishment of local communities.
The 3-years project has the primary aim of promoting and supporting the technical proficiency of Indonesian University staff on integrated water resources management (IWRM) at the river basin scale, with particular emphasis on coastal peat land and mangrove conservation with their important functional roles in the regulation of river basin hydrology.
Knowledge
resulting from research findings of projects with related topics, and
in which the various partners have been involved, will be employed on
skills upgrading, and the usage of novel technologies to improve the quality
of teaching and learning will be investigated. As a result, educators,
researchers and other relevant stakeholders will have available to them
an up-to-date understanding of the sustainable management of water resources. Moreover, a regional and multilateral networking between university departments and research institutes specializing on IWRM in Asia and Europe will be promoted, strengthening academic and scientific connections and the interchange of information by promoting mobility and portability of skills and academic credentials.
